Doctor Who was supposed to have celebrated its thirtieth anniversary Lost in The Dark Dimension, but when that feature length special fell through for numerous reasons, what ended up being produced was a two-part Eastenders crossover skit for BBC’s annual Children In Need fundraising event.
While in Doctor Who terms, it may be little more than a pantomime runaround that makes very little sense, I could never truly hate Dimensions in Time.
“We seem to have slipped a groove in time. Where have all these people come from? And where are we?”
The Doctor, Dimensions in Time: Part One
For one, it’s a lot of fun seeing all the doctors, companions and monsters again, albeit ‘fated to wander a dismal corner of the universe for twenty years’. It was also the first new Doctor Who I’d seen since becoming a fan again and I remember sitting in my halls of residence living room wearing my dodgy 3D specs when the hyperactive techno theme tune kicked in. Mostly though, it’s worth it for the moment when the Sixth Doctor and Brigadier finally meet on screen.
Prohibitive licensing costs mean it may never see a commercial release, but if you still have your VHS copy recorded off the telly box in November 1993, Dimensions in Time is a fun waste of 15 minutes or so.
