Short hops and side steps along the way!
N.B. there might (or might not) be spoilers in this article!
This curio, broadcast on BBC Radio 4 between the first two episodes of The Hand of Fear, whilst short, warrants its place in this marathon by virtue of its being Doctor Who‘s first radio broadcast.
“At this speed we’re getting loster and loster,”
Sarah, Exploration Earth: The Time Machine
Given Exploration Earth: The Time Machine is primarily an educational piece (a fact not unnoticed by my son), the stuff with the Megron does seem a bit odd, although I suppose tacking on a villain with a big booming voice might be considered par for the course as far as 70’s Doctor Who goes.
Attempting to cover four-thousand, five-hundred million years of Earth history in twenty minutes is ambitious even by Doctor Who standards.
Perhaps it would’ve been better to leave out the Megron sub-plot and make the episode purely educational, as the dialogue, whilst a bit obviously textbook info-dump in places, when delivered in Tom Baker’s rich voice make it sound like a lesson taught by the best science teacher ever.
Which of course, the Doctor is.
