N.B. there might (or might not) be spoilers in this article!

Poor Anne Reid — killed by haemovores in The Curse of Fenric, becomes a plasmavore for Smith and Jones and gets fried by the Judoon on the moon.

“Justice is swift.”

Judoon, Smith and Jones

The Doctor has checked himself into Royal Hope Hospital to investigate a build-up of “plasma coils” around the building, not realising the Judoon are about to scoop up and scour the hospital for a fleeing intergalactic criminal! (Ms Reid posing as nice old lady Florence!) Cue lots of stomping around and an unintentionally amusing display of mob hysterics when nurses and patients alike wail against the window after they’ve been transported to the moon.

But there are a few nice touches — whether it’s Florence’s first blood-assimilation victim being a Mr Stoker, Martha’s quip about the slab being from planet Zovirax (possibly a joke lost on anyone who hadn’t seen the ad that ran in the mid-Noughties, or perhaps best of all, in a nod to Freema Agyeman’s casting in the previous season’s finale, Martha’s comment that her cousin Adeola had worked for Torchwood in Canary Wharf.

There’s also a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it aside about the Doctor no longer having a brother, which confirms that at some point he did have one.

Overall though, Smith and Jones is a fun little runaround — with the corridors of an old British hospital providing plenty of space for said running around. Its main function is to introduce us and the Doctor to Martha Jones — who’s engaging from the off — and in that the episode succeeds admirably.
