So, in what seems no time at all (but has actually been a little over two months), I’ve finished watching season one of Doctor Who.
Seasons were epic in those days; this first one lasted 43 weeks back in 1963–4. (They had a week off during The Sensorites, due to Grandstand over-running, I think.) To put it in some perspective, there are as many episodes in this first season as in the entire Seventh Doctor’s run.
“It all started out as a mild curiosity in a junkyard. Now it’s turned out to be quite a great spirit of adventure …”
The Doctor, Strangers in Space
From the first moment of those opening credits, I’ve been captivated, taken along with the ‘spirit of adventure’ of the Doctor, his granddaughter and the two teachers from Coal Hill School.
I’ve enjoyed re-watching the old favourites (The Daleks, The Aztecs) as much as those I’d nearly forgotten (The Keys of Marinus), and although my posts have ended up being a bit more review-like (or review-lite) than I’d intended, I hope I have at least found something positive in each of them.
Of course, that might get harder later on with some of the lesser-loved stories, but we’ll see …
